HO HO HO,,,, well young man, I understand the merits of digital and,
I understand you have visions of sugar plums and DVC superiority over
the old analog BetaCAM SP (BVU) systems dancing in your head.
I hate to say this... just before Christmas but, digital does
not ALWAYS mean superiority over analog. I know the new DVC
system is NOT as good as first generation BetaCAM SP.
That statement is dependent on the type of footage used to
demonstrate. You can bet the footage used to demonstrate
DVC at "the shows" will be preselected to show DVC in it's best light.
Tell you what.... I'll supply the footage, and if a DVC recorder
looks better than a BVU BetaCam SP (first generation)... I'll
eat my beard. HO HO HO....
DVC will be a fantastic home format. I will get it some day.
Just for the ability to archive my "home" tapes.
That is, I'll be able to dub them to a new tape, with no quality
loss, before the original tape self-destructs.
(tape only lasts maybe 20 years... yes, I have tapes
that old)
I don't think any pro-animator on this list would be happy with some
of the results they would get from DVC. It will work fine for ENG
and other short-term broadcastable stuff. I don't think I'd want
to dump my lifes opus to a DVC master. ( a BetaCam Digital, YES)
Digitally speaking DVC is 4:1:1.... compared to 4:2:2, there IS a
difference. Someday that difference will come up and bite you!
If you really want the best.. go analog... go film!
